Top Tips For Reducing Your Water Use
Saving water is easy.
It’s mostly about changing old habits. If you’re on metered water you can cut your bills significantly by making a few simple changes.
No cost
- Don’t run the tap when you brush teeth, rinse vegetables or wash dishes.
- Put a filled drinks bottle in your toilet cistern to reduce the amount of water you flush.
- Put a water jug in the fridge in summer so you don’t have to run the tap to get cold drinking water.
- Have showers instead of baths.
- Keep showers short.
- Don’t rinse dishes before putting them in your dishwasher - scrape instead.
- Use a bucket and sponge to wash and rinse your car, instead of a hose.
- Use the eco setting on your washing machine or dishwasher.
- Use mulch on your garden to reduce the amount of water it needs.
Low additional cost
- Repair leaking taps or pipes.
- Install flow restrictors on your taps and showerheads.
- Install a simple rainwater collection system for watering your garden.
- Put plants in your garden that are suitable for the amount of rain you get.
- Install a 'low-water' toilet (one that uses no more than six litres of water per flush).
- Water plants early in the morning to reduce evaporation.
Worthwhile investment
- If you have a thirsty garden, install a drip irrigation system connected to a rainwater collection system.
- Cover your swimming pool when you’re not using it, to reduce evaporation.
